Investigations

I uncover agenda-setting stories using datasets, FOIs and my network of sources.
Building on my work exposing PPE shortages at HSJ, I performed an exclusive investigation for the Good Law Project that revealed government procurement officials had ordered so much stock it could not be adequately stored in the UK. Officials were racing to cancel and delay billions of pounds worth of orders as it piled up in shipping yards and slowed down supply chains already struggling to deal with Brexit.

My subsequent coverage in HSJ revealed the government spent more than £750m storing PPE over the first year and a half of the pandemic. Much of this stock is still being stored in its country of origin, China.

Exposing the PPE crisis - HSJ

'Excellence in Reporting Coronavirus'

Press Gazette, April 2020

From February 2020 onwards, I covered England's PPE scandal for prestigious specialist publication HSJ. From the first government assurances that enough stock was in place to the crippling shortages that followed, I reported on the challenges facing the NHS procurement staff scrambling to protect frontline workers in a series of exclusives recognised by Press Gazette as "Excellence in Reporting Coronavirus".

As the government raced to buy up equipment, my colleagues and I revealed the incredible sums ministers had earmarked for protective kit. I continue to cover the effect of this spending on the public purse, as the government continues to shell out a significant amount of money on the storage of what has been shown to be largely unusable stock.

Uncovering scandals: Imaging shortages, data privacy, cancer waits & health inequalities - HSJ

While working as a correspondent for HSJ, I investigated a number of health scandals with national implications, from the impact of pension scheme changes on breast cancer waits to the sharing of mental health patient data with multinational firms. I uncovered these exclusive stories by analysing data, working closely with sources and filing freedom of information requests.
